Advice for Applicants

Each year the John Smith Memorial Trust receives many applications for only a limited number of places on its Fellowship Programme. Before filling in the application form, candidates are advised to read the advice below on how best to complete the form. These suggestions should act as a guide to applicants and in no way guarantee candidates a place on the programme.

Suggestions for applicants:

• Try to give full and detailed answers to all the questions asked – think about why you are being asked these questions.

• Give full answers but keep to the word limits. You must answer each question using a maximum of 300 words. If you exceed this limit your answer may not be considered.

• Be sure to explain exactly what your position is and how it fits within the structure of your organisation. You should also give details about your organisation and its work. We would prefer you to describe your organisation in your own words, and not just by cutting and pasting information from a website.

• It is important to demonstrate your achievements in the past, and also your goals for the future – you should think carefully about these areas of the application form.

• Use the John Smith Memorial Trust website to gain a full understanding of the Fellowship Programme so you can explain why you think you should be selected. You may find it useful to look at our list of past Fellows and the kind of positions they hold.

• Ensure that you have enough time to spend on your application – we require a high level of written and spoken English, so it is important that you check your answers carefully before submitting your application.

• You must submit all parts of your application form as a digital file. The form must be submitted by email to your local British Council office (with exception to Moldova and Russia) with all relevant documentation no later than the deadline. A printed copy, with your original signatures and photograph, is also required. Please follow this link for a list of local British Council offices: British Council Team

• Please remember that we receive a large number of applications each year so to be selected for interview your application must be well thought out – what is it about you and your achievements that makes you stand out from the crowd?

Thank you for your interest in the JS Fellowship Programme. We look forward to receiving your application. If you have any further questions, please contact us
