Michael Gove MP

Michael is the Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath. He was elected as MP for Surrey Heath in May 2005. He has served as Shadow Minister for Housing & Planning and is currently Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families.

He was educated at Robert Gordon’s College (Aberdeen) and studied at Oxford University, Lady Margaret Hall. After graduating, Michael began his career in journalism, working for local and national newspapers, radio and TV. He has reported on issues as diverse as EU corruption in Brussels and the threat to small businesses from red tape as well as championing the victims of crime. Among other positions he has been a reporter for BBC TV and the BBC Radio Four Today Programme, and News Editor and Assistant Editor for The Times. Whilst working at The Times he organised the Anti-Street Crime Campaign with Frances Lawrence, wife of murdered headmaster, Philip Lawrence, which succeeded in establishing awards for good citizenship among the young and securing a ban on combat knives. Michael has also appeared regularly on radio and television, as a panellist on Radio Four's "The Moral Maze" and BBC 2's "Newsnight Review" and a guest on Channel Four News, Any Questions and Question Time.
 
Michael is a former Chairman of Policy Exchange (2002-2005), a centre-right think-tank which has come up with innovative policies on policing, local government and fighting terrorism.

He is married to Sarah Vine, a Leader Writer at the Times and they have two children.
