The tenth anniversary of the death of John Smith has seen a remarkable renewal of the universal expressions of respect and affection that so marked John's untimely death. What was common to all the tributes, then and now, was the sense that John had come to embody and to give voice to certain values that were the best fruits of our democracy.
John's family, friends and colleagues were determined to keep his eloquent message alive and as widely understood as we could make it: so they set up the John Smith Memorial Trust. It has created a remarkable Programme that increasingly spreads knowledge and understanding of the sinews of democracy.
The Trust is fortunate that its unique work has been supported by many individuals, by corporate sponsors, by the Department for Constitutional Affairs and by many friends and colleagues of the Rt. Hon. John Smith, here and abroad who support its aims and methods.
