Ukraine's future is safe thanks to the energy of youth
By Trustee Lord McCluskey
Great cities like Rome, Moscow, Paris or Edinburgh inevitably have a history of triumph and tragedy, success and failure stretching over centuries of human achievement, the achievements invariably tempered by folly and wickedness of a character that succeeding generations find bewildering.

Democratic Civilian Oversight of the Security Sector in Ukraine
by 2005 Fellow Alexander Demyanets

John Smith Fellows Association of Ukraine

The foundation meeting of the John Smith Fellows Association of Ukraine was held at the offices of the British Council in Kiev on the 10th November 2003. On behalf of the Trust, Catherine Smith spoke of the Trust’s view that the Fellowship Programme was only the beginning of a process. The Trust is keen for fellows to return to their country and use some of the experiences they had benefited from in the UK. The British Ambassador to Ukraine, H.E. Robert Brinkley is Honorary President of the Club, along with Baroness Smith and Lord McCluskey. Speaking at the launch, he expressed his delight that the Association was being set up and hoped it would become an important vehicle for good work in Ukrainian society. The meeting appointed Dr. Stanislav Shevchuk as Chairman, and established an “Initiative Group” with Yegor Kalashnikov, Olga Ryeka, Denys Zhmaev and Maxim Shkilov as first members of the Board. The meeting discussed a programme of work for 2004. An important priority will be to help members maintain contact with John Smith Fellows in other countries. The Association will join with LINKS, the British Association for Central and Eastern Europe and the Ukrainian Bar Association to develop a multi track project in support of the rule of law and legal reform in Ukraine.
