Anna Sevortian

Anna is Deputy Director of the Center for the Development of Democracy and Human Rights (CDDHR, Moscow, Russia). For over 10 years Anna has been involved in civil society and human rights initiatives by different national and international institutions. In 2009 Anna started a new programme at the Andrei Sakharov Museum and Public Center in Moscow - a series of talks on peace, progress and human rights. The first round of discussions were held in May and June 2009 on implications of the 1989 events on modern Russia and Europe.

During 2008 Anna was based in the UK. She was a Visiting Fellow for the Centre of International Studies at the University of Cambridge, and a Chevening Scholar at the University College London. During that year she conducting research on NGOs, their relationship with the state and models for the retention of NGO independence. Currently Anna is a Fellow of Smolny College at Saint Petersburg University and works on an innovative course on methods of human rights protection. Her research interests are focused at the state and non-state actors’ relations, channels of political communication in emerging democracies and human rights discourse in international relations.

At the time of the 2006 Fellowship Programme Anna worked for the CDDHR as their Information and Research Coordinator. The CDDHR is a non-profit organisation which aims to support the development of democratic institutions and sustainable mechanisms for human rights protection in Russia. The Center analyses policy issues, develops recommendations for governmental and non-governmental and international organisations, develops NGO networks and coalitions, and organises advocacy campaigns. Anna was responsible for project management in the fields of human rights, anti-racism, and democracy development, as well as preparing publications and training on advocacy and journalism.
