Lana Nimri

2011 MENA Fellow, Jordan

Lana is currently Acting Head of the International Cooperation - Jordan Enterprise Development Corporation (JEDCO) & Senior Policy Office at the Jordan Services Modernisation Programme (JSMP), an EU funded programme managed by JEDCO. She is also President of the Jordan Cultural Association for Development Law (JADEL) the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) Alumni Association in Jordan.

Lana is a licensed lawyer with specialities in trade, labour and commercial law. Her professional experience includes both private practice and work with Government of Jordan.  For example, she has completed work for the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. She has also been part of numerous teams involved in negotiating international agreements on behalf of her country. Lana has a BA in Law from the University of Jordan and an LLM in International and European Legal Studies from the University of Durham.

Lana would like to lead Jordan into becoming a modern, tolerant, open society through utilising the young, dynamic, and highly educated workforce that resides there. She aims to increase awareness and build a capacity for the three social partners in labour relations (employees, employers, and government) in order to explain the role of how the role of law and how respect for law can bring greater benefit to all.

Additionally, in an attempt to respond to the heavy burden on national courts that often leads to delayed justice and/or reluctance to seek judicial recourse, Lana hopes to mediate a resolution of labour disputes. She plans to implement this using three separate but complementary components:

• Training and Capacity Building
• Advocacy: Developing publication and website containing information on labour law (rights and obligations) and how it effects the work environment
• Mediation: by introducing the concept to labour contract as well as developing this service the JADEL an NGO.
