Hazar Khasawneh
2011 MENA Fellow, Jordan
Hazar is a licensed lawyer and member of the Jordanian Bar Association. She is currently the Head of Strategy and Innovation Division at the Strategic Planning and Performance Bureau in the Abu Dhabi Department of Justice.
Hazar has been a practicing lawyer and consultant in rule of law and justice matters for over 10 years. She has been active in the area of human rights in Jordan and is a founding member of two NGOs: the Institute for Leadership Excellence and the TAMKEEN Centre for Legal Aid and Human Rights. She has a law degree from the University of Jordan and an LLM in International Human Right Law from the University of Essex. In addition, she is a licensed Taekwondo instructor.
Hazar hopes to build upon the existing “Rule of Law Project” set up by the Virginia Bar Association which focuses on teaching children about Rule of Law through interdisciplinary materials integrated into classroom. Her aim is to foster a ‘Rule of Law’ culture in Jordan that will motivate targeted audiences to respect the laws of others, avoid discriminatory behavior and become more responsible towards learning. In particular, Hazar would like raise awareness among young people of their rights and responsibilities, and the importance of a society ruled by law using simple, friendly messages from key stakeholders, including judges, young children, government officials, and academia.
She plans to develop a 15 minutes video to be broadcast on local television (e.g., Jordan TV, MBC, Ro’ya TV) that will deliver messages that promote awareness about the concept of rule of law, significance of knowledge and legal education.
Hazar plans to implement this process through the Institute for Leadership Excellence by:
• Building partnerships with key stakeholders including the media, Judges, civil society, the United Nations, and Children.
• Developing the video material and content.
• Shooting and directing the video
• Official Launch of the video and Broadcasting
