Aven Omer Ahmed
2011 MENA Fellow, Kurdistan Region of Iraq
Aven is a Member of Parliament in the Kurdistan Regional Government. In her position as MP she bears two main responsibilities, firstly, in building the legislative processes and, secondly in monitoring the performance of the cabinet. She also holds an MA Law.
Aven sees the monitoring and scrutiny of government as an essential element of a consolidated democratic system. More specifically, she sees the legislative process as only the beginning of a process in achieving real policy change. Aven would like to use her time in the UK to learn how she can enhance the party system in the Kurdish Region. In particular, she would like to explore how the British Parliament holds key actors of such changes to account to ensure that they fulfil their obligations as passed in laws.
