Dmitry Samokhvalov

2008 Fellow, Kyrgyzstan

Dmitry is Deputy Chair and Co-Founder of the Gender Equality Centre (GEC), a public association dealing with a wide variety of social and human rights issues. GEC works within the Talas region of Kyrgyzstan with victims of trafficking, gender inequality and domestic violence. GEC carries out research into trafficking between Talas and the US, and engages in projects promoting HIV awareness and women’s rights to land.

Dima is currently overseeing research into the role of local self-governance in Talas. In a small region with a largely rural population, Dima and the GEC believe it is critical to have an efficient local government with a transparent administration, and this research will help to highlight its importance in the region’s development.

Dima's role includes strategic planning, fundraising, and project proposal development. He provides consultations to victims of trafficking and arranges counter-trafficking training for migration services. He runs seminars for state authorities, law enforcement agencies and vulnerable social groups. He also works to maintain relationships with partner organisations in Kyrgyzstan and abroad, and builds links between the GEC and local and state authorities.
