Trust Advisor Rt Hon George Reid re-appointed as Lord High Commissioner
Downing Street, 2 December 2008: The Queen has approved the appointment for a second year of the Rt Hon George Reid as Her Majesty’s Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 2008.
On his re-appointment Mr Reid said:
“It is a great privilege to hold an office first established in 1690 and to follow such previous High Commissioners as the Duke of Rothesay, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York, John Buchan, Walter Elliott, John Reith, Margaret Herbison, Willie Ross, George Younger and David Steel.
“Last year my wife and I made official visits to Seamab School in Rumbling Bridge, to Alloa for a meeting with the voluntary sector, and to William Simpson’s Home in Old Plean. We hope to be back in our part of Scotland in 2009.”
Mr Reid and his Suite in the Palace of Holyroodhouse
The Lord High Commissioner lives, and entertains, in the Palace of Holyroodhouse during the General Assembly in May. He makes the opening and closing Addresses to the Assembly. During the Assembly, the Lord High Commissioner is ranked third in the Scottish order of precedence, after the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. He flies the Royal Standard, has no number plates on his car, and has a guard from the Royal Regiment of Scotland. At the end of the Assembly he reverts — “quite properly, in the Scottish democratic tradition,” says Mr Reid — to being an ordinary citizen again.
