What Makes A John Smith Fellow?

January 2011

Trust Adviser, the Rt Hon George Reid, was interviewed by the Face2Face television programme on 27 January after chairing the Trust’s interview panel in Chisinau, Moldova.

Asked by presenter Natalia Munteanu what qualities he was looking for in Smith Fellows, he said:

“Someone we can assist to grow professionally, who will then add value to their own countries.  Someone who shows qualities of leadership and who is a good team player.  Someone who has a spark – who can think strategically and out of the box.”

Reid – who is a former MP, MSP and Speaker of the Scottish Parliament – was also quizzed on social and political transition in the countries of Eastern Europe.  He said that good governance, transparency and equal rights, particularly for women, were key to building a healthy and vibrant democracy.

During the visit the British Ambassador to Moldova, Keith Shannon, held a reception for former Smith Fellows — many of whom now have key roles in Government, Parliament, the diplomatic service and in NGOs and Think Tanks.
