British Council Library Opens in Bishkek

On the 19th January 2007, the Deputy Director of British Council Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan, Paul Norton, and several senior representatives from the Kyrgyz government opened a new centre of British Literature and Education at the National Library of Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek.

This new centre will give access to an array of resources including English literature, educational texts for the preparation of English language exams, information about UK educative initiatives and also electronic resources. In addition the library will contain books from the ‘Millennium Library’ collection, including copies of the Bible and the Koran.  There will also be a poster exhibition entitled “Innovation Britain” which demonstrates the nation’s technical achievements at the turn of the century.

The John Smith Trust is delighted that British Council resources will be available in the Kyrgyz Republic. Information about the John Smith Fellowship Programme will also be available at the new library.
