The Man

John Smith was the leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom at the time of his sudden death in May 1994. He was widely respected as an advocate for the principles and practices of democracy. The Trust was created to commemorate his ideals by spreading understanding of how to put them into practice. Read More About John Smith.

The Trust

The John Smith Memorial Trust seeks to promote social justice and good governance in countries that are in the process of developing their own models of democracy but are interested in lessons from the British experience. We are a charity wholly independent of any political party but enjoy the support of many who are prominent in public life, regardless of any political affiliation they may have.
